1961 Hall of Fame Game
Three Dodger pitchers combined for a five-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in the 20th Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field as Los Angeles defeated the Orioles 6-2 on July 24, 1961.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Dodgers’ shortstop Maury Wills beat out an infield single. A walk and a single scored Wills, with Norm Larker – who had walked – advancing to third on a wild throw. Larker scored on a sacrifice pop out to Baltimore second baseman Marv Breeding.
The Dodgers picked up another run in the top of the sixth inning to take a three-run lead when Willie Davis hit a solo home run.
Baltimore responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Whitey Herzog solo shot for the team’ first run of the game.
However, the Dodgers pulled away, scoring one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Their run in the seventh came off two hits and another Orioles error.
Pitcher Jim Golden’s two-run single accounted for the final two Los Angeles runs.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Orioles scored their final run of the game when shortstop Jerry Adair hit a ground rule double, which was followed by an infield out, advancing him to third. Herzog hit a sacrifice fly to score Adair.
No player on either team had more than one hit, but Herzog batted in both of Baltimore’s runs. Golden led the way offensively for Los Angeles with two RBI.
The victory for the Dodgers gave the National League a 10-9 edge over the American League, with one game ending in a tie.
